Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

IBS is a functional gastrointestinal disorder that can affect 1 in 5 adults causing symptoms like bloating, cramping, constipation and diarrhoea. The cause of IBS is unknown but it is linked to alterations in gut bacteria, diet, stress, anxiety and the speed at which food moves through the gut. Symptoms vary from one individual to another.

An assessment for IBS should be considered if you have had any of the following symptoms for at least six months: abdominal pain or discomfort, bloating, or change in bowel habit. Dietary changes can significantly improve symptoms for many people. We can offer both first line IBS dietary and lifestyle advice as well as second line treatment of the low FODMAP diet if suitable.

FODMAPs or fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols are carbohydrates that are poorly absorbed in the small intestine and ferment in the colon. There are three phases of the low FODMAP diet; elimination, reintroduction, and integration and is best implemented with support from a dietitian who is trained to do so.
